Kintsugi Workshop: For Continuing to Care for Your Beloved Vessels

At the Repair Workshop, we carefully examine vessels that have cracked or chipped, restoring them to a usable state for daily life once more.
You may bring in vessels you have cherished and used yourself. Alternatively, lessons using Japanese tableware provided by the gallery are available upon request (for a fee).
Our collection primarily features pieces sourced from antique dealers, ranging from the Edo period to the early Showa era. Each vessel possesses its own distinct character and history.

Classroom Features

The Kintsugi Life Course is an ongoing kintsugi program where you freely choose traditional lacquer kintsugi techniques based on the vessel's condition, your goals, and your skill level. Each session can be tailored to your pace and objectives—whether repairing chips or cracks, focusing solely on finishing, or continuing the full traditional lacquer process.
It is suitable for those who have completed the basics and wish to solidify their skills, those wanting to deepen specific techniques, and those who wish to continue kintsugi in their daily lives. This course nurtures kintsugi from a “special experience” into an “everyday skill” through a cycle of learning and practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is my first time doing kintsugi. Can I participate?

Yes, beginners are welcome to join.
At our studio, we carefully explain the fundamentals of kintsugi and how to handle natural lacquer, with instructors providing step-by-step support throughout the process. Please feel free to come.

Can I take the repaired item home the same day?

Authentic lacquer kintsugi requires multiple steps and drying periods, so it cannot be completed and ready for use on the same day. On the day of the class, we will complete the foundational steps. We will provide detailed guidance in class regarding the process to completion and the required drying periods. (By continuing to attend classes, you will work toward completing your piece.)

Is there anything I need to bring when I participate?

If you have a piece of pottery you'd like to repair with kintsugi, please bring it along. Due to time constraints, we ask that each participant bring only 1 to 2 items. All tools will be provided in the classroom. If you're concerned about getting dirty, please bring an apron or arm covers.

Can I bring in a piece I want to have repaired?

Yes, you may bring your own vessel.
However, depending on the extent of damage or the material, restoration with genuine lacquer may be difficult. While we primarily handle ceramics and porcelain, we may be able to accommodate other materials or conditions. If you wish to have your vessel assessed beforehand, please write 〈Request for Pre-Assessment of Vessel〉 in the “Questions/Requests” section when applying and send us a photo of the vessel.

Please tell me how to get to the classroom.

By Car
Approximately 10 minutes southwest from Himeji Station. Head west on National Route 2 and turn left at the “Kameyama” intersection. Continue straight ahead, and Hontoku-ji Temple will come into view. Parking is available within the temple grounds; please use that lot.

By Train
Transfer to the Sanyo Electric Railway at JR Himeji Station and get off at Sanyo Electric Railway's “Kameyama Station.” It is about a 3-minute walk from the station to Hontoku-ji Temple.

I'm worried about getting a lacquer allergy. Do I need gloves?

This workshop uses genuine lacquer.
Some individuals may react to lacquer, so we recommend wearing gloves if you have concerns.
If needed, please bring your own gloves that you find comfortable to use.
The instructor will also explain how to handle lacquer and important precautions beforehand.

What are the differences between simplified kintsugi and traditional lacquer kintsugi?

Simple kintsugi uses resin and other materials to complete repairs quickly.
In contrast, traditional lacquer kintsugi employs natural lacquer, requiring repeated application and drying over an extended period to achieve the final finish.
While this process demands considerable time and effort, it significantly enhances the vessel's durability and character, allowing it to be cherished for generations.
