Frequently Asked Questions

This is my first time trying kintsugi. Can I participate?

Yes, no problem. We'll proceed step by step, explaining each process carefully so it's easy to understand even for first-timers. Please feel free to join us.

Can I take the repaired item home the same day?

Yes, you can generally take it home with you on the same day.

Is there anything I need to bring when I participate?

If you have pottery you'd like to repair with kintsugi, please bring it in.
While we may be able to handle multiple small chips, due to time constraints, we generally limit repairs to two pieces per person. All tools are provided at the shop.

Can I bring in items I want to have repaired? Can I bring in items other than ceramics?

Depending on the extent of damage to the vessel, restoration may be difficult. While items other than ceramics, such as glassware, may also be eligible for kintsugi repair, the final result may vary.
If you wish to have your item assessed beforehand, please write 〈Request for Pre-Repair Assessment〉 in the “Questions/Requests” section when submitting your application. Please send us a photo.

Please tell me how to get to the classroom.

By Car
Approximately 10 minutes southwest from Himeji Station. Head west on National Route 2 and turn left at the “Kameyama” intersection. Continue straight ahead, and Hontoku-ji Temple will come into view. Parking is available within the temple grounds; please use that lot.

By Train
Transfer to the Sanyo Electric Railway at JR Himeji Station and get off at Sanyo Electric Railway's “Kameyama Station.” It is about a 3-minute walk from the station to Hontoku-ji Temple.

I'm worried about getting a lacquer allergy. Do I need gloves?

This experience uses resin compliant with the Food Sanitation Act instead of genuine lacquer, so there is no risk of lacquer allergy.

Are there differences in the manufacturing process between synthetic lacquer and natural lacquer?

Yes, there is a difference.
With genuine lacquer, the application and drying process takes time and requires multiple steps.
In our kintsugi workshop, we use resin compliant with the Food Sanitation Act, so drying time is short, allowing you to complete the process on the same day.
